After ripping up Triple-A for the better part of two months, Cubs infielder Pedro Ramirez was recalled by the team on May 22. Additionally, the Twins called up one of their own notable prospects, as outfielder Gabriel Gonzalez is now on Minnesota’s active roster.

Gonzalez recalled by Twins

The Twins recalled outfielder Gabriel Gonzalez from Triple-A St. Paul.

Gonzalez was acquired by the Twins from the Mariners in the 2023-24 offseason for Jorge Polanco. He posted a .908 OPS last season, as Gonzalez hit well at three levels (High-A, Double-A, & Triple-A) and earned himself a spot on the 40-man roster. This season, the 22-year-old slashed .216/.294/.392 with eight home runs and 14 extra-base hits over 44 contests.

There is some swing-and-miss in his game, as highlighted by the 25.7% swing-and-miss rate he sported in Triple-A this month, plus a slider/sweeper Whiff% that was a tick over 31%. On the other hand, he showed more of a reserved, disciplined approach this month, with a Chase% of 23.7% in May before the promotion.

Last month in St. Paul, that was 34.9%.

Cubs promote Ramirez

The Cubs promoted infielder Pedro Ramirez on May 22, as he replaced injured infielder Matt Shaw on the active roster.

It’s been a breakout season for the 22-year-old infielder, a switch-hitter who hit seven home runs, a 7.9% Barrel%, and posted a 1.023 OPS in April. Overall, he had 19 stolen bases in 43 contests, plus nine total home runs, already a career-high for him.

So far in May, Ramirez slashed .322/.414/.441 with five extra-base hits over 15 games. Plus, a swing-and-miss rate of 15.8% (a tick better than 16% from April), good for 39th among the 362 Triple-A players with at least 40 swings at the dish this month.

However, he will expand out of the zone often. He didn’t do too much of that in April (25.3%) but more of it in May with a 32% out-of-zone swing rate.

Bryan Torres was recalled by the Cardinals.

Yovanny Cruz (Yankees), Spencer Jones (Yankees), Zack Kelly (Red Sox), and Connor Joe (Mariners) were optioned to Triple-A.
