The Atlanta Braves officially filled their managerial vacancy on November 3. The new Atlanta manager will be a familiar face for Braves fans, as bench coach Walt Weiss will be the team’s next manager. Weiss becomes a second-time manager, as the former Major League infielder spent four seasons as manager of the Rockies during the 2010s.

Weiss is an internal hire, as the former AL Rookie of the Year was on the bench for the Braves since the 2018 season. Formerly the bench coach for the Braves, Weiss was on Brian Snitker’s staff when the Braves won the 2021 World Series.

The 61-year-old does have managerial experience. Weiss managed the Rockies for four seasons (2013-16), as he replaced Jim Tracy as manager in Denver. He never had a winning season with the Rockies. Weiss’ high mark in terms of wins was 75 in 2016, his final season as the Rockies’ manager.

He had two 90+ loss seasons with the Rockies, which came in consecutive seasons (2014-15).

As a player, Weiss spent 14 seasons in the Majors. He won a World Series in 1989 with the Athletics, made the All-Star Game once (1998) while a member of the Braves, and posted a .360+ OBP in five separate seasons.

Weiss replaces Brian Snitker, who both he and the Braves announced after the season that the latter would depart as team manager. Among managers with at least five seasons at the helm in Atlanta, Snitker’s .548 winning percentage was fourth-best in franchise history.

Snitker moved into an advisory role with the Braves’ franchise after the 2025 season.

This marks the seventh managerial hire made by a Major League team this winter. The Angels, Giants, Nationals, Rangers, Orioles, and Twins all previously made managerial hires over the last five weeks.
