With 2026 Spring Training around the corner, now seems like a good time to take a look at what went down in the winter leagues. The Mexican Winter League was home to several notable names, including the likes of Jose Urquidy, Isaac Paredes, and some other blasts from the past.

Navarit

Eight current or former Major Leaguers suited up at one point for Navarit.

Former Red Aristides Aquino played one game, while David Hensley suited up for two.

Robert Dugger and Stephen Gonsalves were the ex-Major Leaguers who saw the most action. Dugger struck out 16 over 20 games, while Gonsalves worked in 11 games, striking out 10.

As far as notable prospects are concerned, Padres left-hander Victor Lizarraga struck out 24 over 33 innings and posted a 2.43 ERA. He walked 14 and only surrendered one home run. Aaron Zavala, a 2021 second-rounder by the Rangers, hit six home runs and 13 extra-base hits across 27 games.

Hermosillo

Astros infielder Isaac Paredes played for his hometown team yet again in 2025-26. The Hermosillo native picked up seven hits in nine games for the Naranjeros.

Paredes was one of several interesting names who suited up for Hermosillo.

Willie Calhoun paced the team with 78 hits and 11 home runs, both team-highs. Former Ray Harold Ramirez batted .294. Current Guardians prospect Milan Tolentino, who dealt with big strikeout problems in the Minors, was punched out 26 times over 85 plate appearances.

Moving on to the pitching side of things, there were eight current/former MLBers on the staff. Among them were Paul Campbell, Matt Foster, and former Cardinal Fernando Salas, the latter of whom posted a 1.53 ERA over 18 appearances.

Touki Toussant was the team’s strikeout leader, as the former first-round pick punched out 61 over 64 innings. Ex-Mets reliever Sean Reid-Foley struck out 18 over 15 frames and didn’t allow an earned run.

Culican

Jon Singleton had a nice winter in Mexico.

The 34-year-old Singleton, who spent 2025 between the Astros and Mets organizations, hit eight home runs and 23 extra-base hits over 53 contests. Singleton was one of several ex-Major Leaguers on Culican.

J.P. Martinez hit a team-best 13 home runs and also stole 26 bases. Martinez last played in 2024 with the Braves.

The team’s save leader was Anthony Gose, who had 30 strikeouts over 29 innings and notched 12 saves.

Obregon

Remember Allen Cordoba? Cordoba was a Rule 5 Draft pick back in 2026 by the then-rebuilding Padres, just months after he finished playing for Johnson City in Rookie ball. The right-handed hitting infielder showed flash and potential but after playing 100 games in 2017, Cordoba never made it back to the Majors.

At 30 years of age, Cordoba is playing in Mexico.

He finished the year with a team-high 71 hits, as well as 22 stolen bases to pace the team.

The other notable hitter on the team was Kyren Paris, who had a fantastic start to 2025 before cooling off. Paris had his strikeout problems with the Angels last year, and in the Mexican Winter League, he struck out 16 times over 17 games.

However, he also walked 15 times and picked up 14 hits.

Eight former MLB pitchers played for Obregon. One of them was Devin Sweet, who was recently confirmed as a non-roster invite for the Red Sox. Sweet struck out 16 and walked 11 over 15 innings.

Los Mochis

A couple of ex-Rangers farmhands headlined Los Mochis in 2025-26.

Leonys Martin, now 37 years of age, hit 11 home runs for the team this winter. Martin spent parts of nine seasons in the Majors. Nick Williams, once a top prospect in their system, hit .289/.368/.455 with four home runs.

Also of note: Padres prospect Jose Verdugo, a 17-year-old who slashed .333/.437/.505 in the Dominican Summer League, went 6-35 for Los Mochis.

Mets minor league pitching prospect Daniel Duarte struck out 23 over 24 innings and didn’t allow an earned run.

Jalisco

Speaking of the Rangers, Alejandro Osuna picked up reps in the Mexican Winter League after an up-and-down rookie season with Texas this past year.

Osuna hit rather well, as he slashed .339/.486/.411 across 15 games. The 23-year-old consistently made contact both at the Major League and Minor League levels but didn’t hit for much power with Texas, as his approach took him more to the opposite field than the pull side.

Billy Hamilton, who was a backup plan for the Cubs this past fall, notched 29 hits and 11 stolen bases.

Padres outfield prospect Tirso Ornelas picked up four extra-base hits and 17 total hits over 21 games.

Mexicali

Arguably, the most notable name on the Mexicali roster this year was Valente Bellozo. Bellozo is a free agent, as he opted to go that route after the Marlins outrighted him to Triple-A this past November.

Bellozo, who got a fair amount of work with Miami over the last two seasons, is not a strikeout pitcher by any means. In three starts with Mexicali, Bellozo walked three and struck out nine over 12 innings.

Nine ex-MLB hitters were on the team, including Phillip Evans, Raudy Read, and ex-Yankee Estevan Florial. Florial walked a lot in Mexico, as he racked up 46 over 58 games. An adept power hitter when he could tap into it, Florial picked up six home runs and 18 extra-base hits.

Guasave

There weren’t a ton of easily-recognizable names on the Guasave roster, even though 10 former Major Leaguers played for the team this year.

Former first-round pick Phil Ervin notched 46 hits, third-most on the team.

Jacob Nix struck out 21 and walked 10 over 28 frames.

Domingo Acevedo, formerly of the Athletics, walked eight over eight innings.

Tucson

Only two former Major Leaguers played for Tucson: first baseman Bobby Bradley and catcher Donny Sands.

Sands, who played in the Mexican League this past year, batted .068 across 12 games. Bradley had five extra-base hits over 20 games.

Mazlatan

After Jose Urquidy signed with the Tigers last winter, he spent most of the year recovering from elbow surgery. Urquidy, now a free agent, only pitched in two Major League games for Detroit.

He pitched well for his hometown team, as Urquidy struck out 35 over 33 innings to make up for lost time. The right-hander posted a 1.09 ERA.
