Multiple reports out of New York indicate the Mets are summoning Ronny Mauricio up to the Majors. Mauricio, who debuted in 2023, missed all of 2024 recovering from two knee surgeries. But after a hot run in Triple-A and an injury to Mark Vientos, Mauricio has a shot to be a contributor once more.
A Look at Mauricio
It’s been a bit since Mets fans have seen Ronny Mauricio at the MLB level.
For those who remember, Mauricio had a decent September 2023, as the switch-hitting infielder posted above-average bat speed figures (74.7 MPH average) and proved to be a force both with his bat and speed. While he only had a .296 OBP, Mauricio hit two home runs and six extra-base hits across 26 games, along with seven stolen bases.
However, Mauricio suffered a significant injury in the winter of 2023-24: a torn ACL during the Dominican Winter League that ended his 2024 campaign before it even started.
The 24-year-old played 10 tune-up games with St. Lucie (A) and Binghamton (AA) before going back to Syracuse (AAA). During the two weeks he was in Syracuse, Mauricio was one of the hottest hitters in the International League, as he hit .515/.564/.818 (1.382 OPS) with three home runs over nine games.
Now, he gets a shot at playing time in the Majors, as Mark Vientos hurt his hamstring during the Mets’ June 2 game against the Dodgers.
Now, there are still flaws in his game. One, Mauricio still loves to hack at pitches out of the zone, something that’ll just be part of his game. Between all recorded 2025 pitches (via Statcast), Mauricio swung at 34.6% of pitches he saw out of the zone this season.
It’s close to par with what Mauricio did both in the MLB (42.4%) and Minors (38%) back in 2023.
That, coupled with a naturally long swing, led to big questions about what the hit tool will ultimately be. Even though he had a strong run in Syracuse, it’s still tough to envision him having high on-base numbers with that setup.
And yet, it’s still hard not to feel excited about Mauricio’s return, given the toolset. Why? Just watch the bat speed he showcased on this home run from earlier this year.

His time in Syracuse gave him not just an opportunity to get going again after well over a year on the shelf but also (re) acquainted him with the hot corner. Mauricio played four games at third with the S-Mets and added three more during his rehab. That adds up to seven, or about 77% of his MiLB experience playing there.
Mauricio has nine total games of experience at third down in the Minors, along with five with the Mets. He was a primary shortstop as of 2023 but saw time at second to increase his versatility and find him a path to Queens.
The 24-year-old is a strong, rangy infielder who should be fine from a toolset standpoint at third base. And the Mets may need him at least in a platoon role, given Brett Baty‘s hit well over the past month.
