Two former MVPs returned for their respective teams on June 3. Mookie Betts is back after a toe fracture, while Bryce Harper came back from an elbow injury suffered last week. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks will be without their ace for at least the next two weeks — and possibly longer.

Burnes officially placed on IL

The Diamondbacks placed Corbin Burnes on the 15-day IL with elbow inflammation. It’s retroactive to June 2, one day after the D-Backs removed him from his start against the Nationals with elbow tightness.

Arizona left Burnes back to get his elbow looked at but the initial testing came back inconclusive.

Betts and Harper return

The Dodgers got Mookie Betts on June 3, after the former MVP missed the entirety of their series against the Yankees and one against the Mets after he suffered a fractured toe going to the bathroom.

Meanwhile, in Toronto, another former MVP returned. Bryce Harper returned to the Phillies’ lineup after he missed all of last weekend with an elbow injury. For what it’s worth, Harper hit a home run in his first at-bat back.

Rehab assignments

Brandon Woodruff went out for yet another rehab start with Nashville (AAA) on June 3. However, this one didn’t go as planned, as Woodruff exited early after taking a line drive off his right elbow.

Woodruff will return to Milwaukee for X-rays.

Blue Jays reliever Nick Sandlin threw a scoreless inning with the team’s FCL affiliate.

Nationals outfielder Jacob Young went 1-3 with a run scored with Harrisburg (AA).

Other injury news

The Mets placed Mark Vientos, who exited their game on June 2, with a right hamstring strain. It opened the door for Ronny Mauricio to return to the Mets.

Miami placed Max Meyer on the 15-day IL with a right hip impingement, one day after he struggled against Colorado.

As expected, the Yankees placed Luke Weaver on the injured list with a hamstring strain.

Giants reliever Jordan Hicks was placed on the injured list with right great toe inflammation.

Marcell Ozuna is playing through a tear in his hip, confirmed by the Braves’ general manager on June 2. It’s an injury he’ll have to play through for the entirety of the season, per Alex Anthopolous.

Tigers pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long will be activated off the injured list, per manager A.J. Hinch.

Evan Carter (Rangers), Fernando Cruz (Yankees), Jazz Chisholm Jr. (Yankees), Chase Dollander (Rockies), Andres Gimenez (Blue Jays), and Tyler Heineman (Blue Jays) were activated off the injured list.
