A Look at Notable Changes in NCAA Top 25 After Week 3

The two biggest movers in the USA Today/Coaches poll were Dallas Baptist and Vanderbilt. Dallas Baptist jumped up five spots to #19, while Vanderbilt’s up to #10 (+4) after a strong weekend in Houston.

The Patriots had a strong weekend in Frisco, TX, as Dallas Baptist beat Arizona and #13 Alabama over the weekend. Their only loss on the weekend was to Indiana, who fell out after blowout losses to the Crimson Tide and Wildcats. Grant Jay and Miguel Santos each have six home runs for Dallas Baptist, while ace Ryan Johnson has 34 strikeouts after his first 19 innings.

The Commodores, meanwhile, swept their three games in the Astros Foundation College Classic. Vanderbilt capped off a perfect weekend with a 14-11 win over Texas, who took a steep fall in the rankings.

The Longhorns began the week with a blowout win over St. John’s, who upset Florida earlier in the year. However, Texas went winless in the Astros Foundations College Classic. After losses to LSU, Texas State, and Vanderbilt, the Longhorns dropped nine spots to #22.

In other news, the top five in the NCAA coaches rankings remain largely the same. Wake Forest, LSU, Arkansas, TCU, and Oregon State enter the fourth week in those spots. However, Arkansas jumped up two spots to #3.

Arkansas hurler Hagen Smith struck out 12 more batters this past weekend against Murray State. Smith’s 31 strikeouts is tied for fourth in the nation, along with Duke hurler Jonathan Santucci and two other starters.

Texas A&M, Florida, Tennessee, Clemson, and Vanderbilt are sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively.

Also, Florida State jumps into the top 25 at #25 after a perfect 10-0 start. The Seminoles had a strong offense on paper heading into 2024 and their lineup has come through to this point. Potential 2024 first-round pick Cam Smith is hitting .478 as of March 4, while slugger James Tibbs III has six home runs on the campaign.
