Despite adding big fish via free agency and the trade market over the past few years, the Giants’ 2026 season didn’t go well. Yes, the club added assets for the future, a big plus. But the Giants also lost 97 games, second-most in the National League. Should San Francisco, a team in a peculiar rebuild stage, want to improve this offseason, it’s clear what should be targeted.

Biggest needs for Giants

The Giants are in a weird spot, as San Francisco’s lineup is littered with players on salary & term (Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, & Willy Adames) that make it tough to do a true teardown. There are also youngsters like Bryce Eldridge and Bo Davidson, plus catcher Daniel Susac, who figure into the club’s long-term plans.

Casey Schmitt, another player with control and one who had a career year before requiring knee surgery, is also an asset.

So, in reality, the Giants may not do a ton to tweak the offense. Especially if the club intends to go with a more nuanced rebuild and work with what is in front of the organization.

Pitching is a bit of a different story. Giants’ starting pitchers ranked 24th in total strikeouts (704). Logan Webb had a down year before he went down with an injury over the final weeks. Robbie Ray, who traded to San Diego in August, leaned more on the sinker in 2026. And Adrian Houser & Tyler Mahle, the latter of whom found success in Atlanta, didn’t have great years.

The Giants did a good job of stockpiling arms through trades and the MLB Draft in 2026. But aside from Matt Wilkinson, who made his MLB debut late in 2026, none are real options heading into the 2027 campaign.

As for the bullpen, that too was a weak spot. But with Camilo Doval back in San Francisco after he was claimed off waivers, and Randy Rodriguez a potential option in 2027, that should be an improved spot for San Francisco.

But again, if the Giants go with a slower-paced build, all of this could be moot.
