Heading into 2027, the Phillies have some questions to answer. With several notables now free agents, and a perplexing year for some of Philadelphia’s relievers, the lineup and bullpen will be points to watch this winter for the Phillies.

Biggest needs for Phillies

Alec Bohm and Luis Arraez both went to free agency after the World Series, which could be the beginning of a shake-up amongst the Phillies’ infield.

Now, Arraez wasn’t in town long for the Phillies. He played 46 games for the club, slashing .278/.309/.369, and missed out on the NL Wild Card Round after he suffered an ankle injury during the final week of the regular season. But he did drive in 21 runs, as the Phillies used him and his plus-hit tool as a cleanup hitter.

What’s interesting about how the Phillies played post-deadline was that Bohm, who was mired with low numbers for much of the year, hit much better after the lineup shakeup in August. He slashed .305/.388/.433 with 16 extra-base hits in the regular season. Bohm followed that up with an extra-innings home run that won the Phillies Game 2 of the Wild Card Round.

With those losses, a short-term infield pickup would make sense. The Phillies also have Bryan Rincon and Aidan Miller, the latter of whom could be the club’s shortstop of the future, in the wings.

The outfield is a bit more of a question mark. Assuming Bryce Harper is back at first base, the Phillies truly could use a bat to slot in at a corner. Brandon Marsh had a fantastic first half before a not-so-great second half. You know what you’re getting with Justin Crawford at center: speed but not a lot of punch offensively, as he’s more of a hit-over-power hitter.

Which leaves right field as the question mark. Adolis Garcia, signed in the winter, struggled and required season-ending lat surgery in June. There will be options available this winter, should the Phillies want another corner outfielder.

Lastly, the rotation (Cristopher Sanchez, Zack Wheeler, Jesús Luzardo, Aaron Nola, Andrew Painter) looks fine on paper heading into 2027. However, bullpen help should be a priority, aside from a depth rotation option.

The club scrambled at the deadline for bullpen help after things went awry down the stretch. Orion Kerkering and Jose Alvarado weren’t as sharp compared to years past. Brad Keller, who was signed in December 2025, suffered a UCL tear last season.
