For the first time since 2019, Major League Baseball will be bringing back Players Weekend this summer. The event will look somewhat similar to ones in the past but with some different twists. Here’s what you need to know about 2024 MLB Players Weekend.
Dates for 2024 MLB Players Weekend
Per Major League Baseball, the 2024 MLB Players Weekend will take place from August 16-18, 2024.
The weekend will include several nationally televised matchups, including the Dodgers-Cardinals game on August 17 (FOX) and the 2024 Little League Classic on August 18 (ESPN).
Special events
During the MLB Players Weekend games from 2017-19, players were able to wear special jerseys with their nicknames on the back of the jerseys, as opposed to their last names.
Examples included Carlos Carrasco having “Cookie” on his jersey, while Seth Lugo sported “Quarterrican,” a nod to his Puerto Rican roots.
Major League Baseball confirmed that nicknames will not be on the backs of players’ jerseys, although special hats will be worn.
Players will be permitted to use custom bats. But, this event will have a keen focus on the players’ backgrounds, including charitable work and honoring those who helped get them to the Majors.
- August 16: Fun aspects of players’ personalities, friendships, and off-field interests will be featured.
- August 17: Focus will be on charitable and community initiatives important to players.
- August 18: Players will celebrate people who helped them on their path to the Major Leagues.
These will spread out across the three days.
