Picks to consider

Wake Forest is the odds-on favorite to win the College World Series in 2024 — and for good reason.

The Demon Deacons lost Rhett Lowder last summer but arguably have a better rotation in 2024 than in 2023. The trio of Josh Hartle, Michael Massey, and newcomer Chase Burns have been excellent. And on offense, potential first-round picks Nick Kurtz and Seaver King lead a deep offense.

LSU, meanwhile, has one of the nation’s best starters in Luke Holman, as well as potential first-round hurler Thatcher Hurd leading the charge. Holman threw 12.1 scoreless frames over his first two outings and struck out 18 to this point.

And with a strong offense that includes Tommy White, slugger Jared Jones, and Paxton Kling, LSU should be a very interesting team to watch.

Outside of the early favorites, two teams to consider here are TCU (+2000) and Texas (+3000).

TCU went to the College World Series last year and is off to a flying start in 2024. The Horned Frogs went 9-0 to begin the season, a stretch that included a dominant sweep of #20 UCLA.

TCU’s starting pitching is a concern, as their rotation hasn’t been strong to this point. However, the Horned Frogs have a deep lineup that includes Payton Tolle and potential 2024 first-round pick Anthony Silva.

The Longhorns, meanwhile, are looking to make it to the CWS after narrowly missing out in 2023. A powerhouse lineup led by Jared Thomas and a rotation led by Lebarron Johnson Jr., one of the best starters in the nation, is worth watching.

Texas will have a stiff test on the weekend of March 1 when the Longhorns face LSU and Vanderbilt. And with conference play set to begin soon, we’ll get a good look at what these teams really look like.
