With Week 17 of the 2025 fantasy baseball season getting ready to start on July 27, it’s time to look at potential reinforcement options. Given the trade deadline is on the horizon, several traded players could be placed in favorable — or unfavorable — positions. One recently-traded player cracked our Week 17 waiver wire target list, which also includes several hot hitters out of the break.
Best Week 17 hitters to target
- OF Colton Cowser (Orioles)
- 3B Josh Jung (Rangers)
- 2B/OF Angel Martinez (Guardians)
- 3B Ryan McMahon (Yankees)
- OF Tyler O’Neill (Orioles)
Let’s start with one of the hotter hitters coming out of the break: Angel Martinez.
Martinez, in his second year as a Major Leaguer, batted .342 (13-38) with four RBI and eight runs scored for Cleveland out of the break. Those 13 hits were good for a tie for fifth in the Majors in total hits since the All-Star Game.
The 23-year-old was never a big power hitter in the Minors and hasn’t been a big one thus far in the Majors (3.7% Barrel%) — except in the one category that matters in fantasy leagues. Martinez hit nine home runs this season, although it’s hard to project where he’ll end up.
Next up is Ryan McMahon, who has a new home. McMahon was traded to the Yankees on July 25, and the move has paid off thus far. The former All-Star picked up three hits and two RBI in his first two games with the Yanks.
With Aaron Judge on the IL, the Yankees will need some of their other bats to step up. McMahon has the power to be an impact player; that much has been true. But one thing noted in our trade recap of the deal is that McMahon didn’t have the kind of protection in the lineup over the last few years, compared to all the big bats in the Yankees’ lineup.
Even without Judge around, McMahon is a name to consider.
Colton Cowser, meanwhile, isn’t a bad buy-low candidate. Yes, Cowser hit just .200 (6-30) out of the break. However, the three stolen bases in that stretch ranked him in the top five of the league.
The offensive numbers have been mixed in Cowser’s second season. However, he’s still hitting the ball hard (10.6% Barrel%, 6.7 Barrel/PA).
His teammate, Tyler O’Neill, can hit home runs in bunches when he’s healthy. O’Neill did that this past weekend, with home runs in three straight days.
O’Neill, available in over 60% of Yahoo! leagues, is a former 30-home run hitter.
Lastly, Josh Jung has been very productive for a hot Rangers team. Through his last four games, Jung picked up eight hits, including a home run. Jung was called up from Triple-A on July 21.
Overview of Week 16
The Blue Jays did very well over the last week and a half, taking series against the Yankees and Tigers. Addison Barger, part of our Week 16 list, hit .324 with a home run and seven RBI to continue his productive July.
Roman Anthony, also on that list, struck out 14 times over his first nine games after the break. However, he’s still hitting; the rookie picked up eight hits in that stretch.
