The first full week of the 2025 MLB and fantasy baseball seasons has concluded, and there’s a lot to process. Between injuries, slow starts for several aces, and more injuries, it’s likely at least some fantasy players will need help. Here’s a look at our fantasy pitcher target list for Week 2, highlighted by a trio of starters.

Best Week 2 pitchers to target

Before anything, is it too late for a round of applause for Jesus Luzardo. Luzardo, on our Week 1 target list, felt like a must-grab. The Phillies left-hander showed good velocity in the spring and was a 200-strikeout pitcher two years ago. Thus far, he’s tied for the league lead in strikeouts (19).

Anyway, back to the Week 2 list.

Chris Bassitt and Kris Bubic have been among the league’s best-performing arms over the first two weeks. The two are tied for the ninth-most strikeouts (16) in MLB right now and both have a 0.71 ERA.

Bassitt is a jack of all trades who can throw anything at any count. While he’s never been a plus strikeout pitcher, as he heavily leverages his sinker and cutter, the bonuses to Bassitt are he’s on a good enough team to get wins and he does generally do a good job of limiting hard content.

As for Bubic, the former first-round pick never clicked as a starter before 2024, when he excelled as a reliever returning from injury. However, the Royals gave him a shot to start thus far and has thrived.

There’s reason to believe it’s not a mirage. One, Bubic has the stuff, including a sweeper with depth and a popping four-seamer with above-average IVB (18.5”). The sweeper is a relatively new addition, as Bubic swapped out the curve he used over the early parts of his career for the new slider.

Two, a trippy crossfire-esque delivery that makes Bubic very deceptive.

Lastly for the starters, Matthew Boyd is back at it again. Boyd’s thrown 10 scoreless innings to begin 2025.

As for cheap save options, look for Seth Halvorsen and Dennis Santana.

Halvorsen only has one save to his name but is the top option in Colorado. The right-hander owns an overwhelming fastball, along with a changeup and slider that makes him a good ground ball pitcher.

The same can be said for Dennis Santana. David Bednar is in the Minors, while Colin Holderman is on the IL. However, it doesn’t matter as Santana got the first save chance after Bednar left.
