With almost half of 2025 still yet to be played, there’s still time to move up fantasy baseball standings. And, with some injured players getting close to return, it’s time to take a look at which IL stashes could be impact adds for the second half of the season.
Hitters
- OF Anthony Santander (Blue Jays)
- SS Ezequiel Tovar (Rockies)
There aren’t many high-end — or, at the very least, hitters with high potential — IL hitters who are readily available in a healthy chunk of leagues to be considered stashes.
Anthony Santander just barely makes this list, considering he’s available in 40% of Yahoo! leagues. Santander has had a terrible season by his standards, as his .179/.273/.304 (.577 OPS) would be the worst slash line he’s had in his MLB career. It comes months after Santander signed a lavish five-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Santander suffered a partial dislocation in his left shoulder in May, something he tried to play through for nearly a month before landing on the injured list. Hence, the numbers should be taken with a grain of salt.
The problem, however, is that it’s unclear when exactly Santander will be ready for Major League action.
He’s on the 60-day IL and isn’t eligible to return until late July. And as of the second week of July, he’s yet to resume swinging a bat.
The other notable second-half batter stash worth a look is Ezequiel Tovar. Unlike Santander, Tovar is closer to Major League action.
Tovar hurt himself during the Rockies’ first series of 2025 in Tampa and, despite trying to play through it, went on the injured list.
He came back in May and hit very well in abbreviated action, as he cracked three home runs and batted .333 over 60 plate appearances. However, an oblique strain sidelined him in June.
As noted on July 6, Tovar has been on the road back to Colorado. He played four games between July 5 and July 9, and on the 9th, he played the whole game at shortstop.
While Tovar is a high-chase, high-whiff player, he hit 26 home runs last season, something that can’t be ignored.
Pitchers
- SP Spencer Arrighetti (Astros)
- SP Zach Eflin (Orioles)
- SP Luis Gil (Yankees)
- SP Grayson Rodriguez (Orioles)
The Orioles have been besieged by pitching injuries, specifically to their rotation. Baltimore hasn’t had Kyle Bradish (TJ surgery) or Grayson Rodriguez pitch at all this season. Rodriguez could come back at some point in the second half.
Rodriguez’s 2025 season has been a slog. The right-hander dealt with shoulder, elbow, and lat problems but has progressed. He’s thrown bullpen sessions, most recently on July 8. However, he’s yet to face live hitters.
Even if the Orioles don’t make the playoffs, it would be beneficial to get Rodriguez action in the Majors if he can, simply so everyone can feel good heading into the offseason. But, how these next few weeks go will dictate a lot about his availability.
Zach Eflin, though, is a different story.
Eflin is on track to start a rehab assignment on July 13. Which, would put him on pace to potentially come back before the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline. He’s a prime target to be moved, making him more valuable, as Eflin could land with a contender.
Spencer Arrighetti suffered a broken thumb in April, after the right-hander had a ball hit his throwing hand during batting practice. He’s begun to build up, with the Astros hoping he can return in the second half.
Fantasy owners would be wise to look at Arrighetti, who finished in the top 20 in strikeouts during the second half last season.
The same can be said for Luis Gil, the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year. He’s expected to start his rehab clock on July 13.
And lastly, for those who see Corbin Burnes and Justin Steele available in free agency, those two are done for 2025.
