Former NL Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes will get further examined after leaving his start on June 1 early, thanks to an elbow problem. And in Philadelphia, his former teammate Christian Yelich took a ball to the hand and had to exit himself. Those were just two injury-related happenings on the first of June.
Burnes set for MRI
Diamondbacks starter Corbin Burnes left Arizona’s game on June 1 against the Nationals after experiencing elbow tightness. It came in the fifth inning after Burnes retired the first two batters in the inning before he gave up a hit to CJ Abrams.
Burnes will not leave for the Diamondbacks’ upcoming road trip, as he’ll get an MRI to get a further look at his elbow. The right-hander said that he felt the tightness in the fifth inning before it became too much.
“It just got to the point where the tightness was just too much. I waved them out and didn’t feel like we needed to push any farther. So hopefully, we caught it early. Hopefully, it’s not bad, but we’ll see.”
Yelich leaves game
Christian Yelich had to leave the Brewers’ game on June 1 after he was hit on the right hand with a pitch. Yelich was diagnosed with a right hand contusion. The good news is that his X-rays came back clean.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy believes Yelich will miss the team’s game on June 2. Aside from that, he’s day-to-day.
Eovaldi on IL
The Rangers placed Nathan Eovaldi on the injured list with right elbow inflammation, retroactive to May 29. It came days after Eovaldi left his start against the Blue Jays early.
Eovaldi currently sits fourth in the Majors in bWAR (2.7).
Other injury news
Daulton Varsho (hamstring), Justin Slaten (shoulder), Zach Dezenzo (hand), and Luis Garcia (right adductor strain) were placed on the injured list. Ronel Blanco, out for the rest of 2025, was transferred to the 60-day IL.
Erik Swanson (Blue Jays), Matt Waldron (Padres), and Jose Quintana (Brewers) were activated from the injured list.
