On the second Friday of the regular season, several notable pitchers hit the 15-day IL. Rangers hurler Jack Leiter went on the IL thanks to a blister injury, while a biceps strain shut down Michael Soroka. Plus, there’s news regarding an infielder from Arizona and St. Louis, respectively.
Leiter on IL
The Rangers officially placed Jack Leiter on the IL with a right middle finger blister, retroactive to April 2. Texas recalled Patrick Corbin, signed in late March, from Frisco (AAA) to replace Leiter on the roster.
Leiter had a great first two starts, as he struck out 10 over 10 and gave up just one run. The right-hander was cruising through his game on April 2 against the Reds before being pulled for what was called precautionary reasons at the time, pertaining to the said blister.
Corbin, signed as starting depth during Spring Training, will take the vacant rotation spot and pitch on April 7 against the Cubs.
Soroka banged up
The Nationals placed Michael Soroka on the 15-day IL, retroactive to April 1. It’s due to a biceps strain in his right arm.
Soroka started against the Blue Jays on March 31. The right-hander got roughed up, as he gave up four runs and five hits, including a home run, during his lone start.
Washington signed Soroka to a one-year deal last December.
Marte injured
Just days after the Diamondbacks gave Ketel Marte an extension, the veteran second baseman left Arizona’s game on April 4 in the first inning with a left hamstring strain, per the team. Marte took a bad step on his way to second and limped to the base, before being pulled.
Other injury news
- The Cardinals placed infielder Nolan Gorman on the IL with a right hamstring strain. Thomas Saggese was recalled from Memphis (AAA).
- Gunnar Henderson was activated from the IL. Henderson was rehabbing in Norfolk (AAA) before his activation.
- Alexis Diaz was sent on a rehab assignment to Louisville (AAA). Diaz got four whiffs and hit 95 MPH during his outing on April 4. He struck out two but walked two.
