It was an eventful day on May 2, in terms of injuries across MLB. An oft-injured superstar landed back on the injured list, while the Guardians and Red Sox hold their collective breaths after two fluke players resulted into two injuries.

Trout back on injured list

Mike Trout was officially placed on the 10-day IL on May 2 with a bone bruise on his knee, just two days after jamming his left knee. Both Trout and the team expressed hope that his stint on the IL will be minimal, as the Angels outfielder said he felt significantly better.

Still, it marks another season where Trout, who had nine home runs before the IL stint, lands on the injured list. The last season he didn’t land on the injured list was the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Trout’s whiff rate is 30.1%, up significantly from 2024 but that was a small sample size. The last time Trout played over 100 games was in 2023, a season that saw him sport a 30.2% Whiff%.

Jazz to miss time

The Yankees were already down key figures in their lineup. Now, add Jazz Chisholm Jr. to that list. New York (AL) placed Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day IL with a right oblique strain.

Per the team, he’s expected to miss four to six weeks.

Casas stretchered off

The Red Sox may have lost Triston Casas for a while. Casas was stretchered off the field at Fenway Park after he hurt his knee trying to run out a weak ground ball off a check swing hit to Twins pitcher Joe Ryan.

Once Casas hit the bag, the first baseman went down and immediately clutched his knee.

Manager Alex Cora stated after the game Casas suffered a “serious” knee injury.

That wasn’t the only news on the injury front for the Red Sox. Boston got back Connor Wong from the IL but lost Walker Buehler to the injured list. Buehler was placed on the 15-day IL with shoulder inflammation.

J-Ram injured

Speaking of soft ground balls, Jose Ramirez got hurt on May 2 off one — in a very strange play. Ramirez was running out a grounder hit to Chris Bassitt. Bassitt’s throw was off and hit Ramirez in the back.

Ramirez didn’t sustain a back injury but rather a mild right ankle sprain, sustained in the aftermath of the play.

Other injury news

The Reds got Tyler Stepheson back from the injured list. However, outfielder Austin Hays landed on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain.

Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was activated from the 10-day IL. Jorge Barrosa was optioned to Reno (AAA).

Rockies pitcher Ryan Feltner was placed on the injured list with back spasms.

Royals pitcher Kyle Wright, who missed all of 2024, made his first start in the Kansas City organization with Northwest Arkansas (AA) on May 2. It was part of a rehab assignment. Wright struck out four over four innings.
