It’s been a tough last few weeks for pitchers. Several pitchers have gone down to UCL reconstruction surgery, and a new individual joined them on June 13. Diamondbacks reliever Justin Martinez is the latest to need Tommy John surgery. Additionally, a rookie pitcher from the Athletics is also done for 2025.

Martinez to require TJ surgery

The Diamondbacks lost another pitcher to Tommy John surgery.

Reliever Justin Martinez, who left his start earlier this week with a UCL sprain, will need reconstructive surgery for the ligament. The news was confirmed by the team.

It’ll not only leave Arizona down another important arm — remember, ace Corbin Burnes also went down to Tommy John — but also mean he’ll be out for likely most, if not all, of 2026.

Hoglund done for year

Athletics rookie pitcher Gunnar Hoglund is done for the season.

Hoglund underwent season-ending hip surgery after he was dealt a setback in his recovery from a hip impingement.

The Athletics believe he should fully recover in time for Spring Training next year.

Rehab assignments

Max Scherzer was back on the mound for Buffalo (AAA) on June 13. Scherzer, who hadn’t pitched since March 29, struck out four over 4.1 IP for the Bisons. He maxed out at 94 MPH and averaged 92 MPH with his four-seam fastball.

Cubs reliever Porter Hodge threw a scoreless inning for Iowa (AAA). Hodge maxed at 97 MPH with his fastball.

Tigers utilityman Matt Vierling went 0-2 for Toledo (AAA).

Other injury news

Brendan Donovan (toe), Jazz Chisholm Jr. (groin), and Isaac Paredes (hamstring) did not play on the 13th.

As expected, the Mets placed Kodai Senga on the 15-day IL. Senga suffered a hamstring strain on June 12.

Gustavo Campero (Angels), Tyler Gilbert (White Sox), & Austin Hedges (Guardians) were taken off the injured list.
