In a shockwave across Major League Baseball, Corbin Burnes’ 2025 season is over. Just months after Burnes signed a $210MM deal with the Diamondbacks, the right-hander will need season-ending surgery that could keep him out until 2027.

Burnes needs TJ surgery

Less than one week after Corbin Burnes left a start against the Nationals, his 2025 season came to a conclusion. Burnes will need Tommy John surgery, which will likely keep him out for most, if not, all, of the 2026 season.

Burnes’ season finished with 64.1 IP. Despite a previous IL stint and a brief velocity dip, Burnes was still a highly productive pitcher. The 30-year-old posted a 2.66 ERA and above-average Chase% (31.9%) and ground-ball (50.9%) rates.

Additionally, the injury may have implications on Burnes’ existing contract, signed in December 2024. Burnes has an opt-out after the 2026 campaign, and the odds of him exercising it likely went down.

Langeliers headed to injured list

One day after Shea Langeliers left the Athletics’ contest against the Twins, he landed on the injured list on June 7.

Langeliers was placed on the IL with a left oblique strain.

Tovar back on IL

Ezequiel Tovar is back on the injured list.

The Rockies’ shortstop landed on the IL with a left oblique strain, retroactive to June 3. Tovar was on the injured list earlier this season with a hip injury.

Other injury news

Brandon Woodruff is off his rehab assignment again. Woodruff took a line drive off his elbow earlier this week and will likely need a few weeks for the bone bruise to heal, per the team. The good news is that Woodruff didn’t sustain a fracture.

Speaking of paused rehab assignments, Shane Bieber, scheduled to start on June 6 but didn’t after experiencing elbow soreness, has been shut down until next week. Additionally, the Guardians placed Austin Hedges on the 7-day IL with a concussion.

Francisco Lindor didn’t start again on June 7, as he recovers from a fractured pinky toe. However, Lindor did come off the bench as a pinch-hitter and delivered a two-run double for the Mets against the Rockies.

Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle will be out eight to 12 weeks with a Grade 2 hamstring strain.

The Marlins placed Jesus Tinoco on the 15-day IL with a right forearm strain.

Reds first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand was activated from the injured list.
