Shohei Ohtani and Pennsylvania native Nick Kurtz, two starters for the 2026 All-Star Game, won’t be playing the event next week. Ohtani pulled out thanks to an injury. As for Kurtz, a thumb injury is expected to sideline him and force him to the IL.
Ohtani scratched from All-Star Game
The big news on the day was that Shohei Ohtani was scratched from his start on July 10 and the All-Star Game, with knee irritation. He will not travel to Philadelphia next week, despite being selected as a starter by the fan vote.
Ohtani is still well enough to hit, as he was the starting DH for the Dodgers on the 10th. However, he will have his knee drained later this weekend, per manager Dave Roberts.
Kurtz expected to land on IL
You can also axe another player from the 2026 All-Star Game. Nick Kurtz of the Athletics is expected to go on the injured list with a right thumb capsule strain (h/t MLB.com).
deGrom out through break
Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom was supposed to start on July 12, the last game before the All-Star Game break, against the Houston Astros. But that’s not happening.
deGrom was scratched with a mild glute strain.
