There was no shortage of action across MLB on July 29. Tarik Skubal took to the mound in Detroit for, potentially, his last start with the club. Plus, the Marlins made up ground on the Phillies. And the Cardinals picked up a big win to stay within reach of a NL Wild Card spot.
Tigers lose wild game in Detroit
The Tigers lost 10-9 in 12 innings against the Orioles, a gutting loss in what might have been Tarik Skubal‘s last start with the club.
Skubal started with a bang, as he punched out Taylor Ward for his 1,000th career strikeout in the first. The lefty tossed six scoreless innings to start, and the Tigers were up 7-0 after six. Then, things got interesting.
Leody Taveras got the O’s on the board with an RBI single in the seventh. Jackson Holliday and Taylor Ward each had two-run singles later on to bring Baltimore within two. And in the eighth, a two-run triple from Coby Mayo tied it.
Both the Orioles and Tigers traded runs in the 11th, highlighted by a Spencer Torkelson two-run home run. Colton Cowser‘s RBI single in the 12th made it 8-7.
Marlins sweep Phillies
The Marlins moved to two games behind the Phillies on July 29, as Miami won 8-6 over Philadelphia to complete the three-game sweep.
Ryan Gusto and Jesús Luzardo were each charged with six earned runs on the day. However, in Luzardo’s case, he exited the game with a 6-4 lead against his old team. Unfortunately for the Phillies, Seth Johnson let the Marlins back in it in the seventh thanks to a two-run single from Xavier Edwards to tie the game.
Griffin Conine hit his ninth home run of the year in the eighth to push the Marlins ahead.
Braves, Mets split DH
The Mets took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh of Game 1 thanks to a Carson Benge double. It broke the tie created by a Matt Olson two-run shot, and gave the Mets a victory in the opener.
But in the second game, the Mets couldn’t muster any offense off Chris Sale. Sale struck out nine and allowed just two hits over six scoreless in a 1-0 victory for Atlanta.
It was a grind for the Braves to get anything off Christian Scott, as well. Matt Olson drove in the lone run of Game 2 via a single.
Guardians take series in Cincy
The Guardians picked up 12 hits and six runs over the Reds to take a series victory.
Joey Cantillo struck out eight in an effective outing, even though he was pulled after 89 pitches and four innings. It also helped that the Guardians were able to score four in the fifth inning, sparked by an Elly De La Cruz error.
Steven Kwan, Jose Ramirez, Travis Bazzana, and Gabriel Arias each had two hits.
Cardinals win in extras
After nine scoreless innings in St. Louis, the Cardinals picked up a big win against the Cubs.
Chicago went up in the 10th after Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his 24th home run of the year. But in the bottom half of that inning, a Jordan Walker grounder drove in one, and Ivan Herrera ended the contest with a two-run double.
