August 13 was the night Major League Baseball went back to Iowa, as the third installment of the Field of Dreams was contested in Dyersville. The Phillies took on the nearby Twins, and in what was a must-win game at this juncture for both squads, Philadelphia took the win.
Phillies win in Iowa
The Phillies scooped a 7-1 win over the Twins, a commanding victory that Philadelphia was in control of from the outset.
Kyle Schwarber hit a solo shot to lead off the game, and Bryson Stott made it 2-0 with an RBI single later on. Minnesota cut the lead to half with a Luke Keaschall solo home run in the second.
But Keaschall gave it right back, as Schwarber hit a high fly ball in the fourth that bounced off Keaschall’s glove at the warning track — and over the fence. Philadelphia tallied two more via a Brandon Marsh two-run home run.
As for the pitching, Aaron Nola struck out nine over five innings, allowing one run.
Tigers beat Guardians in unique way
Tigers pitcher Keider Montero has a knack for getting outs without needing a strikeout. On August 14, he and the Tigers’ pitching staff lived up to that mantra and then some. Detroit’s pitching staff won 3-0, shutting out Cleveland without a strikeout recorded.
Montero tossed 6.1 scoreless innings before Tyler Holton (1.2 IP) and Kenley Jansen (one IP) covered the rest.
Eduardo Valencia hit his fifth home run of the season in the sixth.
Reds win tense game in Chicago
The Reds won 9-8 over the White Sox in a very wild game, one in which neither pitcher made it through five innings.
Andrew Abbott allowed five earned runs over 4.1 IP. As for Davis Martin, he allowed three runs in the first, which came from home runs by Sal Stewart and Eugenio Suarez. In the third, Martin threw two fastballs at Stewart’s head, the second of which hit his helmet. After the benches cleared, Martin was ejected.
Cincinnati was able to put distance behind the Sox in the fourth, thanks to a Stewart RBI single and a three-run home run from Tyler Stevenson.
Brewers defeat Dodgers
For the first time since Game 4 of the 2025 NLCS, the Brewers were back in Dodger Stadium. This time around, the Brewers won.
Shane Drohan pitched well for the Brewers, and he exited with a lead in the sixth. However, Antonio Senzatela allowed a three-run home run to Max Muncy, which made it 4-2 Los Angeles. It’s worth noting that it was Muncy’s 131st career home run in Dodger Stadium as a Dodger, breaking the franchise record.
Things came apart in the ninth, though, for Edwin Diaz again. Diaz was charged with three runs allowed in the ninth, his fourth blown save of the season. Garrett Mitchell tied it in the ninth after Jackson Chourio made it 4-3, and Jake Bauers‘ RBI single later on gave Milwaukee a permanent 5-4 lead.
