It was a big day across Major League Baseball, as everyone wore #42 for Jackie Robinson Day. April 15 saw a full slate of games, and the Reds, Yankees, Cubs, Diamondbacks, and Dodgers were among the winners on the day.
Stewart’s two home runs lead Reds
Sal Stewart had his first multi-home run game in the Majors. The rookie hit two three-run home runs in his first two at-bats off former Red Tyler Mahle to help Cincinnati win 8-3.
He accounted for two of four home runs from the Reds. Eugenio Suarez went deep in the first, while Elly De La Cruz bashed his sixth of the season in the fourth.
Rhett Lowder struck out four over 6.2 IP and allowed three earned runs in the victory.
Dodgers sweep Mets
The Dodgers swept the Mets on Jackie Robinson Day, as Los Angeles put up eight. The Mets scored two, ending the series with three total runs scored.
Shohei Ohtani wasn’t in the Dodgers lineup — but he did start on the mound and pitched beautifully. Ohtani (42.3% Whiff%) picked up 10 strikeouts and hit triple-digits multiple times in the victory.
Hyeseong Kim got the scoring off with a two-run shot in the second. A Dalton Rushing grand slam in the eighth put the finishing touches on the victory.
Yankees come back to win
The Yankees won 5-4 over the Angels thanks to a manufactured ninth-inning comeback. Jazz Chisholm Jr. got on with a pop-up single and then stole second. Austin Wells walked, and Jose Caballero drove in both to win the game.
Luis Gil (34.3% Whiff%) struck out five over five for the Yankees. However, he gave up three home runs. One of those was to Mike Trout, which was his sixth of the year.
Aaron Judge hit his seventh home run of the year.
Cubs blow out Phillies
The Cubs won 11-2 against the Phillies in the final game of their three-game series in Philadelphia.
Five Cubs had two or more hits in the contest. Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson both had three, and each also had a home run in the win. Matt Shaw also picked up three hits, while Seiya Suzuki and Pete Crow-Armstrong had two.
Shota Imanaga, though, was the headliner. Imanaga shook off a lead-off home run from Trea Turner and struck out 11 over six innings. His 26 swings-and-misses were most on the night, four ahead of Ohtani.
