On an off day for 12 teams across Major League Baseball, there were still a good number of transactions made on April 16. Los Angeles (NL) acquired pitcher Chayce McDermott in a trade, while the Nationals brought back Richard Lovelady after the team lost him to waivers last month.
Dodgers acquire former top prospect
The Dodgers acquired 27-year-old righty Chayce McDermott in a trade with the Orioles. He was reassigned to the Minors after the move.
McDermott made his MLB debut in 2024 and has been good at getting a lot of whiffs. However, walks have been a major issue for McDermott. Last year in the Minors, he walked 45 over 59 frames.
The Orioles designated him for assignment in mid-April.
It’s the second time this week that the Dodgers have acquired a former high-end prospect with elite swing-and-miss talent — yet has command problems. Earlier in the week, Los Angeles brought in Griff McGarry from the Phillies.
In return, the Orioles acquired 20-year-old pitcher Axel Perez. Perez averaged over a strikeout per inning in the DSL last season.
Nationals bring back Lovelady
The Nationals traded for Richard Lovelady, as the team sent cash back to the Mets to complete the deal.
Lovelady rejoins a Nationals team that claimed him off waivers from the Mets back in January. The left-hander spent two months with Washington before he was DFA’d and placed on waivers. New York ultimately claimed him in March.
Other notes
The Braves selected the contract of former Yankee reliever Ian Hamilton on April 16. Osvaldo Bido was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Sung-Mun Song (Padres), Hayden Harris (Braves), and Maverick Handley (Orioles) were optioned to Triple-A.
Jared Shuster (Cardinals) and Kolby Allard (Guardians) were both sent outright to Triple-A.
Per the New York Post, the Rangers released outfielder Mark Canha to pursue a Major League deal. Canha hit .237/.356/.421 with two home runs and three extra-base hits over 12 games with Round Rock.
