March 3 was a big day for the New York baseball teams. Mets ace Kodai Senga made his first start of the spring as he hopes for better after an injury-riddled 2024 season. Meanwhile, in Tampa, Yankees co-ace Max Fried debuted for his new team against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Max Fried‘s first start as a Yankee had its good and bad moments. Fried tossed two scoreless innings to start his March 3 outing, which included a pair of strikeouts, one on Oneil Cruz and the other on Enmanuel Valdez.
However, Fried conceded a walk to Tommy Pham and double to Nick Yorke before exiting the contest. A home run allowed to Jose Bart scored those two runners, leaving Fried with two earned runs on his ledger over 2.1 IP.
The good news? Fried cranked it up to as high as 97 MPH in his outing and posted six whiffs.
For Senga, his debut went well. The Mets right-hander went two scoreless in New York’s 1-1 tie against the Marlins on March 3. Per the SNY broadcast, Senga was seen getting in extra bullpen work after his outing.
Senga’s fastball was a point of interest, as the right-hander’s velocity fluctuated in his postseason outings. He averaged roughly one MPH (94.3 MPH) in his first outing against the Phillies in the NLDS, below his 96 MPH average in 2023-24. It ticked slightly up, for an 94.5 MPH average during his first spring start.
The Mets right-hander also netted himself five whiffs.
Senga was followed up by David Peterson, who tossed three scoreless in relief. Peterson will be a critical piece for the Mets’ 2025 rotation, as the team is currently down two notable starters.
But on top of that, Peterson will look to build off the strong numbers (2.79 ERA, .634 opp. OPS) he posted in the second half.
In other Mets-related news, former New York lefty Jose Quintana signed with the Brewers on March 3.
