Believe it or not but the 2025 Minor League season is nearing its end. There’s just two weeks left in the season for A-ball affiliates before the playoffs, as the calendar begins to approach September. However, there’s still a lot to play for. Here’s a look at notable action from Week 12 of the 2025 Minor League season.
Willits makes pro bow
The Nationals selected high school shortstop Eli Willits with the first overall pick last month, a move that not only gave them the chance to save money but also add a premium switch-hitter with legitimate potential be an standout shortstop. This past week, he made his professional debut with Fredericksburg (A).
Willits did more than hold his own in his first taste of pro ball. The 17-year-old went 6-14 (.429 AVG) with three RBI and four runs scored.
Strong first week for several recently promoted stars
Pirates infielder Konnor Griffin, who was promoted to Altoona (AA) last week, wasted no time to show he can fit in at the next level. Griffin went 6-21 (.286) with four RBI last week for the Curve, part of a strong overall week for the Pirates’ Double-A affiliate.
Former second-round pick Mitch Jebb, as well as Duce Gourson, both hit over .400 for the Curve last week.
Aside from Griffin, there was a lot of roster shuffling last week across the Minors (make sure to read more about that here & here). Several 2025 first-rounders were moved up aside from Willits, including Kayson Cunningham (Diamondbacks) and Charles Davalan (Dodgers).
Cunningham went 5-18 (.278) in his first week with Visalia (A). Davalan, also moved to Low-A, finished tied for first in the California League with eight RBI last week. The former Arkansas standout hit .579 (11-19) for the Quakes.
Promotions & moves
We covered most of the notable promotions over the last seven days in seperate articles earlier this week. However, there were a few that came after the bulk of transactions between August 18-19.
Will Watson, an eighth-round pick by the Mets last year who diced his way through Low-A and High-A, was promoted to Double-A Binghamton on August 25.
Watson, a deceptive right-hander who showed above-average stuff, struck out 120 over 103 innings in total this season.
Paxton Kling, who hit .356 with seven extra-base hits across 12 games for Hickory (A), moved up to High-A this past week.
Kling was a standout performer in high school who struggled in LSU for two seasons before a strong 2025 back home in Pennsylvania, for Penn State. The Rangers selected him in the seventh round this past July.
