Major League Baseball is no stranger to Mexico, as the league has held a number of series previously in the country. In fact, the majority of the regular season games held in Mexico have featured the Padres. San Diego has been a part of three (1996, 1999, and 2018) of the previous five series that have been played in the country. However, the previous five series were held in Monterrey, just south of the U.S.-Mexico border near Texas.
This series could also mark a homecoming of sorts for Giants outfielder Luis González. González, who played his high school ball in Arizona before becoming a star at the University of New Mexico, was born in Hermosillo, Mexico.
This will be the first of two regular season series that Major League Baseball will hold outside of the United States and Canada in 2023. MLB will hold the London Series for the second time in the league’s history in the summer of 2023.
