The Brewers have a relatively farm system and Milwaukee fans have seen that first hand this spring with the presence of rookie Jackson Chourio. Brewers fans are set to get a look at another one of those high-end prospects, as infielder Tyler Black will reportedly join the team this week.
A Look at Black
The Brewers selected Tyler Black in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Wright State. Black did nothing but hit in college, as he posted a 1.079 OPS in three years with the Raiders. Since going pro, he’s hit at every level.
Black belted 18 home runs and 55 extra-base hits last season, including 12 triples. And in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League this season, Black posted a .919 OPS and hit five home runs over his first month with Nashville (AAA).
From a power standpoint, Black can get some loft in his swing. However, he will choke up, as well, and does a terrific job of controlling the strike zone and making contact, two hallmarks of his game at the plate.

The 23-year-old posted a strong .417 OBP across two levels last season and walked (88) at nearly the same amount as he struck out (100).
However, arguably his standout tool is his speed. Black stole 55 bases last season and does project to be a plus runner at the MLB level per scouting reports.
Defensively, Black’s seen time at first, second, and third in his MiLB career but has mostly played at first this season. Reports have questioned his arm strength, which would likely cross third base out of the equation.
Black is expected to be called up on April 30 by the Brewers.
Analysis
Milwaukee has the middle of the diamond well-covered, thanks to Willy Adames and breakout second baseman Brice Turang at short and second, respectively. Black’s game is somewhat similar to the latter, given his speed and ability to get on base.
Given that Black played mostly first in the Minors and assuming he plays there with the Brewers, it’s worth wondering what will happen to Jake Bauers, who’s seen a fair amount of time at first while Rhys Hoskins has been the team’s main DH. Bauers has long been an intriguing name thanks to his raw power but he’s posted just a .633 OPS on the campaign.
Not to mention, Oliver Dunn (.538 OPS) and Owen Miller (.167 OPS) have yet to have success in 2024.
Fantasy Outlook
Tyler Black is an intriguing name and one who’s been on our radar dating back to last year.
Stolen bases are not easy to come by, so if Black can get on base consistently at the MLB level, he can provide value.
But for those who saw Brice Turang in 2023, success at the MLB level is not guaranteed right away.
