The 2023 MLB regular season is underway, but it’s never too early to think about the dog days of summer. The MLB Trade Deadline is a time for contenders to load up on assets for the stretch run, but the date of the deadline has been a moving target in recent years. So, when is the 2023 MLB Trade Deadline? Here’s what we know so far.

2023 MLB Trade Deadline Date
Reports from earlier in the year indicated that the 2023 deadline would land in the month of August yet again. This is indeed the case, as the trade deadline will come on August 1, 2023 at 6 PM ET.
Last year, the cutoff date for making trades came on August 2.
Traditionally, the Trade Deadline has almost exclusively been on July 31. However, the MLB Commissioner now has the ability to set the deadline any day between July 28-August 3. For 2023, it looks like the league will opt not to use the customary date for another year.
As of this writing, it’s still unclear as to which teams will be sellers. Much of that is thanks to the fact that there are now 12 spots for the MLB Playoffs. Thus, more teams will be competitive and be more reluctant to sell off assets.
For those who may need a reminder, the post-Trade Deadline rules are now different. Previously, teams could make trades up to August 31 provided that a player was placed and cleared revocable trade waivers. However, that is no longer the case. Any player traded after the Trade Deadline would not be eligible for the 2023 MLB Playoffs.
