The Mets received a tough injury update on Griffin Canning, albeit an expected one. Canning was indeed confirmed to have suffered an Achilles injury, which will cost him the rest of the 2025 campaign. Additionally, updates on several Rangers players were made available.
Canning done for 2025
Yesterday, Griffin Canning exited the Braves-Mets game after his left leg buckled. And unfortunately for the team, it was a nightmare-ish outcome.
Canning was placed on the 60-day IL with a ruptured Achilles, ending his 2025 season. It’s a major injury blow for both the Mets and the right-hander.
For the Mets, Canning is the third pitcher this month to hit the IL. Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill were placed there earlier this month. Canning, meanwhile, was poised to do well this winter — similar to Sean Manaea and Luis Severino — after making adjustments to both his pitch usage and arsenal.
Canning is currently on a one-year deal with the Mets.
Updates on Rangers’ injuries
For the second time this season, Wyatt Langford is on the injured list.
The Rangers placed Langford on the 10-day IL on June 27 (retroactive to June 25) with a mild left oblique strain. It’s the second time Langford landed on the IL with an oblique strain, as he sustained a right oblique injury back in April.
President of baseball ops Chris Young stated it’s a “very” low-grade strain. However, with the few amount of off days the Rangers have — Texas has just one (July 3) before the All-Star break — and how he was feeling, the team placed him on the injured list.
Additionally, it was confirmed left-hander Cody Bradford had an internal brace surgery, rather than Tommy John surgery. Bradford is out for the rest of 2025.
Rehab assignments
Royce Lewis began a rehab assignment with St. Paul (AAA) on June 27. The Twins’ third baseman went 0-3 with a strikeout and came out of the game for a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.
Pirates reliever Colin Holderman struck out three over one inning with Bradenton (A). Holderman topped out at 97 MPH.
Other injury news
The Reds placed outfielder Jake Fraley on the 10-day IL with a right shoulder strain. It’s retroactive to June 24.
Nathan Eovaldi (Rangers), Kyle Freeland (Rockies), Austin Hays (Reds), Erik Sabrowski (Guardians), and Mark Vientos (Mets) were activated off the injured list.
