Much of the injury-focused nexus of news from June 1 came at Tropicana Field. Two Rays suffered injuries, while the Tigers saw Tarik Skubal take a step forward in his recovery from loose bodies removal surgery.

Skubal throws bullpen session

Tarik Skubal tossed a 64-pitch bullpen session with the club in St. Petersburg on June 1.

Skubal indicated that he felt great afterward and could be in line to make a rehab start this coming weekend with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. He’s been out since last month, when Skubal underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow.

Rays lose two

The Rays lost two players to injury on June 1.

Chandler Simpson suffered a lip injury after he awkwardly slid into second on a stolen base attempt. It happened after his helmet fell off and hit his mouth.

Manager Kevin Cash indicated that Simpson could play on the 2nd.

Taylor Walls, meanwhile, left with a hamstring injury. He is dealing with hamstring tightness.

IL moves

It’s a hamstring strain for Elly De La Cruz, who left the Reds’ contest on May 31 and was placed on the IL one day later. Manager Terry Francona indicated that the shortstop will be out two to four weeks.

Rangers reliever Chris Martin was placed on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder impingement, retroactive to May 31.

The Marlins placed reliever Josh Ekness on the 15-day IL with a right calf strain.

Joel Peguero (hamstring strain) and Carlos Santana (adductor strain) were placed on the 60-day IL.

Andrew Nardi (Marlins), Griffin Conine (Marlins), Welinton Herrera (Rockies), and Robert Garcia (Rangers) were transferred to the 60-day IL.

Waldrep on rehab

Braves pitcher Hurston Waldrep, who has not pitched at the MLB level this season, was assigned to the FCL on June 1 for a rehab assignment.

Waldrep walked two over two shutout innings for the FCL Braves.

Other notes

Zach Neto (neck) was scratched from the Angels’ lineup.

Maikel Garcia (hamstring) did not play on June 1.
